Our Management Team
Epigem’s Management Team has many years combined experience in the polymer micro-engineering industry
Dr Tim Ryan – Director
After 18 years as a scientist and then Research Associate with UK Chemical giant ICI, Tim left in 1995 to found the spin-out company Epigem.
During his 35 years in industry, he has championed a diverse number of fields and established a worldwide scientific reputation (with more than 150 patents comprising 15 basic inventions, over 50 publications and presentations including at least 20 international conference invited lectures) in biodegradable polymers, liquid crystal polymers, effect polymers, nanocomposites, replicated micro and nanostructure originated products including optoelectronic / micro-optical materials and components, microfluidics and large area microelectronics.
He is a serial multidisciplinary project collaborator as his chosen route to customer focused product, technology and nature inspired innovation. Currently he is focused on healthcare and large area microelectronics opportunities.
Tim has served on the committees of professional bodies, Universities and governmental advisory boards and is widely networked in academia and industry throughout the UK and brings this extensive experience to his leadership of Epigem’s Management Team
Marc Magnus – Director of Operations
Marc joined Epigem in 2017, bringing over twenty years’ experience in leading multi functional teams across many manufacturing and operational disciplines.
Marc graduated from university in 1996 receiving a Bachelor of Arts with honours in Business management and computing. Subsequently Marc spent ten years working for a large company within the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) industry before joining Snorkel in 2006. Here he held a number of roles, leading to his appointment as President (Director of Operations) of Snorkels UK manufacturing facility and overall responsibility for its site located in the North East of England.
Marc’s challenge on joining Epigem was to lead the company’s journey to standardise and increase its manufacturing capability thus giving all our valued customers a complete service from concept, design, prototype and volume manufacturing.
Dr Simon Allen – Chief Scientist
Simon is a physicist by training, gaining his degree and PhD from Oxford University. He joined Epigem in 2014, after 30 years in research and then Management roles in ICI and Intertek – eventually managing the Measurement Science teams for both companies in the NE of England. He has extensive experience of scientific management, project leadership and collaborative working, with technical expertise in the areas of optical and electrical properties of polymers, instrumentation and control software
Within Epigem Simon provides support to both the manufacturing and development activities and has taken the lead in a number of UK and EU collaborative programmes, working closely with University and Industry partners.
Phil Summersgill – Chief Engineer
Phil is an experienced project engineer with a creative track record in developing new products and processes and over 25 years of experience in developing and running operations for ICI Advanced Materials and Epigem. Phil is responsible for the design, building, developing the company’s microfluidics capabilities, focusing largely on instrumentation and new manufacturing processes. His strong design skills have boosted Epigem’s capability in its new market of medical instrumentation.
Phil is a named inventor on Epigem’s patent portfolio of interconnection methods for modular microfluidic systems and also on film-based processes relating to products fabricated using wet coating, embossing and imprinting. These microfluidics inventions are now being used in commercial products manufactured by Epigem for a wide range of clients. Phil has supported many of these projects from business idea to commercialisation.
