Interdigitated electrode microcircuitry

Epigem has developed a unique method for the manufacture of customisable fine-line microcircuitry, suitable for a wide range of applications. The conducting elements, typically about 5um thick and anything down to about 15 um wide, are embedded in a transparent resin layer. This is then transferred onto either a rigid or a flexible carrier surface.

Key characteristics of the circuits are:

  • Planar top surface – conducting element coplanar with exposed resin surface
  • Conductor material: nickel with an optional gold ‘flash’
  • Conductor thickness typically 5 um
  • Track gaps and widths down to around 15 um
  • Flexible (typically PET) or rigid (typically acrylic) substrates
  • Overall circuit dimensions up to approx. 300 mm square
  • Protective overlayers can be applied, and patterned to allow access to parts of the circuitry

The microcircuits can be combined with our microfluidic devices to deliver embedded patterned electrodes designed to interact with and influence the flow of liquids within the devices.

Microcircuit-based components and devices are supplied to customers globally and incorporated by them into a range of analytical and test equipment.

Typical applications of our microcircuitry products include:

  • Interdigitated electrodes for DEP (dielectrophoresis) microfluidic components
  • Transparent electrode systems for microscopy-based biomedical analysis
  • Transparent conducting elements (with superior properties to ITO) for photovoltaic cells
